SGS has always aimed to discover and showcase talented young musicians throughout London. Our mentoring programme was introduced by musician Kayleigh Cheer who saw a need for offering added support and guidance to young people coming through SGS.
We have worked with 20 mentors since starting the programme. These currently include Andrea Goldsworthy (bassist for Paloma Faith since 2008), Renell Shaw (bassist for Rudimental) and Bee Bakare (soul singer-songwriter and live music promoter) to name a few.
My mentoring sessions have been such a great experience, Bee has reassured me that I have a natural talent and that I shouldn’t doubt my abilities, as well as helping me expand my songwriting by writing lyrics and melody without my instrument – to help me write in different styles. Every month she has given me a new challenge especially with performing live – although it isn’t my favourite thing I have been attending an Open Mic (was weekly but now monthly) to perform – in order for me to come out of my comfort zone. I can’t say its changed my feeling about it but it’s a great way for me to share my songs. Bee is an amazing mentor, and has taught me a lot which I’m very thankful for.
Mentoring sessions are completely free and happen once a month at an SGS safe space. If you are from London, aged 16-24 and interested in receiving some professional music mentoring, then please sign up here: https://sgs.typeform.com
